SPOTLIGHT: The "Molly" Okay, this is just plain wacky. It all comes from various experiments in making my own steadicam. I wanted a camera support system that could produce really smooth movement, was quick to set up, and could fit almost anywhere the camera needed to move through. If you look at the first picture here you will see the "track", which is simply a 10' x 3" diameter piece of PVC cut lengthwise. I have some small 2x4 pieces attached to it with S-hooks and zip ties (very handy things). These bases can be slid on and off and put anywhere along the length of the track. This single track is where I came up with the name "Molly" - basically it is a mono track dolly system. Mono-dolly or simply "Molly". The second picture shows a close-up of the sled part. I took a 2'x2' piece of plywood, attached it to some scrap 2x4 material and affixed two wheels inline from a pair of $16 roller blades. Two legs of the tripod are 'strapped in' (...still love those zip ties...) - I drilled a lot of holes so that any tripod could fit, the third leg is free so that even with the sled still attached it will act as a regular tripod, and when you need to do a dolly shot you simply lift the whole thing (we strapped it on remember) and put the wheels in the track - Zero set-up time! Kat, from Sneaky Camel Productions, plays with the Molly below. As you can see it is meant to be tilted dramatically - in effect you can do small pushes/pulls of the camera, it fits through the smallest of doorways, and lets you experiment with some really complicated multi-axis movement! ![]() ![]() |
